Amphitheater and Tugela Falls Hike
- About 8 hours
Description
Meeting at the Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge reception we will transfer you up to the trail head car park in a 4x4. Leaving the Sentinel car park, we follow the footpath past the mighty Sentinel 3165m, the highest free standing peak in the Northern Drakensberg, contouring our way to the base of the chain ladders. We use these iron ladders to gain access to the Mont-Aux-Sources Plateau. The plateau is the source of many of South Africa’s rivers including the Tugela which winds its way down to the Indian Ocean near Durban.
The escarpment is about 3000m above sea level, with the steep walls, great valleys and pinnacles facing roughly east and the Lesotho Highlands filling the horizon to the west. From the edge of the Drakensberg, you will have spectacular views of the Amphitheatre, the Sentinel & the Tugela falls disappearing into the vast valleys below as well as the peaks that make up this amazing world heritage site.
If luck is with us, we will be able to see the endangered Bearded Vulture, Jackal Buzzards, Mountain Rhebuck and perhaps some Baboons. This sensitive and pristine wilderness area is an absolute must in the Drakensberg.
Distance 16km. Duration of Walk 8 hours. Lunch on the Amphitheater, weather permitting.

Looking for more of the best tours, activities and experiences?
A very professionally run outfit, so rare in the current climate. From enquiry, to booking and through to the actual experience, 5/5, our company members thoroughly enjoyed ourselves...everyone's still talking about it... well done guys, keep it up, and see you again one day.
I have travelled the world and used over 50 adventure companies, and i have never had a company keep 50% of my money because i cannot make the activity, especially with over 5 months notice.
People deserve to know that once you have paid this company whatever the circumstances, you will not be getting your money back. well maybe some if you argue with them.
Just finished the Drakensberg Grand Traverse with GoVertical. What a wonderful experience. Garth's passion and knowledge of the Drakensberg is legendary. Ill definitely see you again for a trek in the Garden Route.
Very experienced guides and looked after our every need while in the mountains. Highly recommended.
GoVertical really showed us a great time whilst exploring the Drakensberg and the Tsitsikamma Mountains. Thank you again for a wonderful time in South Africa
We spent days with the Govertical team exploring trails on the Garden Route. Fantastic guys. Thank you
